Silicon Carbide
Silicon carbide, a single crystal of high purity, is used to make semiconductors and to make silicon carbide fibers. Silicon carbide due to its stable chemical properties, high thermal conductivity, small coefficient of thermal expansion, good wear resistance, silicon carbide is very hard, has excellent thermal conductivity, is a semiconductor, high temperature can resist oxidation. Properties: the molecular formula is SiC, its hardness is between corundum and diamond, the mechanical strength is higher than corundum, it can be used as abrasive and certain other industrial materials. Industrial silicon carbide was successfully developed in 1891 and is the earliest man-made abrasive. Low-grade silicon carbide (containing about 85% SiC) is an excellent deoxidizer, with which you can accelerate the speed of steelmaking, and facilitate the control of chemical composition, improve the quality of steel. Silicon carbide including black silicon carbide and green silicon carbide, of which: black silicon carbide is quartz sand, petroleum coke and high-quality silica as the main raw material, through the high-temperature smelting resistance furnace. Its hardness is between corundum and diamond, mechanical strength is higher than corundum, brittle and sharp. Green silicon carbide is made from petroleum coke and high-quality silica as the main raw materials, adding salt as an additive, and smelted at high temperatures through resistance furnaces. Its hardness is between corundum and diamond, and its mechanical strength is higher than that of corundum.
The main use of silicon carbide
1, abrasive - mainly because of silicon carbide has a high hardness, chemical stability and a certain toughness, so silicon carbide can be used in the manufacture of cemented abrasives, coated abrasives and free grinding, so as to process the glass, ceramics, stone, cast iron and some non-ferrous metals, hard alloys, titanium alloys, high-speed steel cutting tools and wheels and so on.
2, refractory and corrosion-resistant materials - mainly because of the high melting point of silicon carbide (decomposition), chemical inertia and resistance to thermal vibration, so silicon carbide can be used for abrasives, ceramic products fired kiln with the shed and sagger, zinc refining industry, vertical cylinder distillation furnace with silicon carbide bricks, aluminum electrolysis tank lining, crucibles, small parts of the furnace material and a variety of silicon-carbide ceramic products.
3, chemical use - because silicon carbide can be decomposed in molten steel and steel and metal oxides from the oxygen reaction to generate carbon monoxide and silicon slag. So it can be used as a purifying agent for smelting iron and steel, that is, used as a deoxidizer for steelmaking and cast iron organization improver. This generally uses low purity silicon carbide to reduce costs. It can also be used as a raw material for the manufacture of silicon tetrachloride.
4, electrical use - as a heating element, non-linear resistance components and high semiconductor materials. Heating elements such as silicon-carbon rods (for 1100 ~ 1500 ℃ work of various electric furnaces), non-linear resistance components, various types of lightning valve.
5, other formulated into far-infrared radiation coating or made of silicon carbide silicon plate with far-infrared radiation dryer.
