What are the applications and advantages of corundum abrasives?

Corundum, also known as brown corundum (BFA), is made of quartz sand, petroleum coke (or coal coke), and sawdust through high-temperature smelting in a resistance furnace. Corundum is a colorless crystal with high density and hardness, measuring about 9.5 on the Mohs scale. After crushing, it can be used as abrasive powder, which can be used to make polishing paper, grinding wheels, friction surface whetstones, etc.

Classification of corundum abrasives

Divided into three categories: coarse, medium and fine. Among them, the thick ones are black and red, the medium ones are light red, and the thin ones are red and white. Each grade has uniform particle size distribution, uniform particle shape, sharp-edged crystals, and high grinding power.

Suitable for stone processing, processing marble and other soft materials.

Suitable for glass processing, processing glass edges, TV picture tubes, optical instruments, lenses, prisms, watch glass and other glass products.

Suitable for metal processing, sandblasting, rust removal, and machining. The printing industry processes rubber sheets, leather, sandpaper and other light industrial sample materials.

The grinding force of natural corundum abrasive is slightly higher than that of electric furnace white corundum, but it has the characteristics of strong toughness and middle shell segmentation. Its advantages are that the surface of the grinding parts has high smoothness, few and shallow sand marks, and the grinding surface is fine and evenly distributed, which can improve product quality and is the unique feature of this product. Natural corundum has short processing time, high efficiency and low price, which can make up for the seriously short product life.

Advantages of corundum abrasives

grinding and polishing

Corundum is often used as an abrasive for self-grinding in picture tubes, optical glass, monocrystalline silicon, lenses, watch glass, crystal glass, jade and other fields.

resin abrasive

Corundum abrasives have suitable color, good hardness and toughness, suitable particle cross-section type, and edge retention. It can be used as a filler to replace 20%-30% of BFA in resin abrasives with ideal results.

coated abrasives

Corundum abrasive is the raw material for sandpaper and gauze.

filter media

Granular corundum is used as the bottom medium of the filter bed to purify drinking water or wastewater. It is a new type of water filtration material. It is made of abrasives graded through careful screening, mechanical processing, hydraulic selection and other methods.

Polishing and rust removal

Green corundum abrasive is used for shell-shaped fractures, with moderate hardness, good toughness and sharp edges and corners. It can form new edges and corners and undergo continuous crushing and classification, making its grinding capacity higher than other abrasive materials. It has the advantages of high hardness, specific gravity, stable chemical properties, and self-sharpening properties, which makes it irreplaceable by other abrasives and artificial abrasives.

Wear-resistant floor sand

Corundum has the characteristics of high hardness, specific gravity, stable chemical properties, good wear resistance, and low price. It is an ideal material for wear-resistant floors and can be used as wear-resistant materials for repairing highways, airport runways, docks, parking lots, industrial floors, sports fields, basement floors, etc.

Corundum abrasives are widely used in many fields, such as aerospace abrasive sites. Generally it can be reused 5 times. If the cutting ability is still retained after 5 times, the number of cycles can be increased. After losing its cutting ability, corundum can also be recycled and used as cement aggregate in the construction industry. There is no need to replace existing sandblasting equipment, and it is affordable and practical.
