Tabular Alumina

Tabular alumina TA refractory is a re-crystalline sintered Alpha alumina with high density, it consists of large (50 - 200 µm), flat, table shaped corundum crystals. Feedstock is calcined Alumina which is ground to fine powder and palletized to balls with a diameter of abt. 25 mm. These balls are sintered (fired) at 1750°C in modern shaft kilns and following crushed, milled and sieved to standard fractions/sizes.

Tabular alumina exhibits high thermal shock resistance and high strength. The scanning electron microscope photos show that the surface of the plate-shaped corundum grains is not as smooth as the surface of the fused corundum grains, but rather rough with shallow hemispherical pores. This surface structure promotes its reaction and mechanical interlock with the matrix to increase the strength of the refractory.
